Lime plaster needs a genuinely vapour-open finish: limewash, clay paint, silicate mineral paint or an emulsion with a verified low SD value. Standard vinyl emulsion forms a plastic film that traps moisture in the wall and eventually peels, undoing the point of the lime beneath it. Limewash can go on almost immediately; most other paints should wait around four weeks or more while fresh lime carbonates.
Why standard emulsion ruins lime plaster
Most modern emulsions are essentially thin coats of plastic — vinyl or acrylic polymers that dry into a continuous film across the surface. On plasterboard and gypsum in a modern house, that film is harmless. On lime plaster it defeats the material's entire purpose. Lime is chosen because it lets moisture in the wall evaporate into the room; seal the surface with a polymer film and that moisture has nowhere to go. It accumulates behind the paint, the film loses adhesion, and you get the familiar failure pattern: bubbling, flaking and peeling paint, damp patches spreading behind it, and in time damage to the plaster itself as trapped moisture and salts get to work.
There is a second, quieter cost. A solid-wall building relies on all its surfaces breathing. Every room sealed in vinyl emulsion pushes the moisture load onto whatever surfaces remain open — or into the fabric. Redecorating an old house in standard emulsion is one of the commonest ways good lime work is spoiled, and it usually happens years after the plasterer has left.
What 'breathable' actually means
'Breathable' on a paint tin is a marketing word with no legal definition, so it pays to understand the measurable quantity behind it: vapour permeability, usually expressed as an SD value. The SD value tells you how much resistance a coating puts up to water vapour, stated as the equivalent thickness of still air in metres. Lower is more breathable. As a rule of thumb, a coating with an SD value of about 0.1 m or less is highly vapour-open and a good match for lime; around 0.5 m is moderate; above 1 m it is effectively a vapour barrier, whatever the label says. Some manufacturers quote permeability the other way up, as a 'breathability rating' or vapour transmission figure — the detail matters less than the habit of checking the technical datasheet rather than trusting the front of the tin.
The real options compared
Limewash
Limewash is the traditional finish for lime plaster: lime putty thinned with water, sometimes with earth pigments, applied in several thin coats. It is the most breathable finish available — it is essentially more lime — and it bonds chemically with the plaster rather than sitting on it as a film, so it can never peel. It gives a soft, slightly cloudy depth of colour that flat modern paint cannot imitate. The trade-offs are real: it needs several coats, it can mark if rubbed when damp, colours are limited to alkali-stable pigments, and it wants recoating every few years in hard-working rooms. On fresh lime plaster it is also the only finish that can go on almost straight away.
Clay paints
- Made with clay and natural binders rather than plastic; genuinely vapour-open when honestly formulated
- Very matt, soft finish that suits old walls; helps moderate room humidity slightly
- Easier to apply than limewash and available in wider, more predictable colour ranges
- Less scrubbable than modern emulsion — better in bedrooms and living rooms than busy hallways
Silicate (mineral) paints
- Bind chemically to mineral surfaces using potassium silicate, so like limewash they cannot peel off as a film
- Highly vapour-open with very good durability — often the longest-lived option, inside and out
- Need a mineral background: they suit lime plaster and lime render well but will not bond to old plastic paint
- Typically the most expensive option per litre, and unforgiving of sloppy application on glass and metal nearby
Breathable emulsions
A growing category of emulsions is formulated with reduced or no plastic content and marketed for period homes. The good ones are a practical choice: familiar application, wide colour ranges, washable finishes and honest SD values. But this is also where the weakest claims live. 'Breathable', 'microporous' and 'ideal for period properties' appear on tins whose measured permeability is barely better than standard vinyl. The test is always the same: find the SD value on the datasheet. If the manufacturer publishes a low figure — ideally around 0.1 m, certainly well under 0.5 m — the claim has substance. If no figure is published at all, assume the paint is not meaningfully breathable and choose something else.
How long to wait before painting fresh lime plaster
Fresh lime plaster hardens by carbonation — slowly reabsorbing carbon dioxide from the air — and it is strongly alkaline and moisture-laden while it does so. Limewash is the exception to every waiting rule: because it is the same chemistry as the plaster, it can usually go on as soon as the final coat is firm, and carbonates along with it. Everything else needs patience. Clay, silicate and breathable emulsion finishes should generally wait until the plaster has visibly dried to an even, pale colour and carbonated through — typically four weeks or more for a finish coat, and longer for thick three-coat work, in cold weather, or on walls that started damp. Painting too soon risks patchy colour, alkali attack on the binder and poor adhesion. If a decorating deadline is fixed, limewash first and overcoat with mineral paint later is a well-trodden route.
Preparation and application tips
- Do not use PVA, stabilising solution or acrylic primers on lime — they seal the surface and cause exactly the trapped-moisture failure you are trying to avoid
- Dust the wall down and dampen it slightly before limewash; a thirsty dry surface sucks the water out and leaves a powdery finish
- Apply limewash in thin coats — it looks alarmingly translucent when wet and only develops its colour and opacity as it dries; judge nothing until it has
- Follow the manufacturer's own primer system for silicate paints, and mask glass, metal and tiles carefully — silicate splashes etch
- On old walls previously painted with plastic emulsion, breathable paint on top achieves little; the old film needs to come off first if breathability is the goal
- Expect mineral finishes to need two or three coats, and keep a little of the mixed batch for touching in
How mineral colours behave
Colour works differently in mineral finishes, and it is worth knowing before choosing from a card. Limewash dries far lighter than it looks when wet — often by several shades — and shifts subtly with humidity, reading slightly darker in damp weather. Pigment choice is restricted to alkali-stable earth and mineral pigments, which is why traditional palettes lean to ochres, umbers, soft greens and off-whites rather than saturated brights. The finish is never perfectly flat: light moves across limewashed and clay-painted walls with a gentle variation that suits old, slightly undulating plaster far better than a uniform plastic sheen. Most people who live with it come to see that variation as the point.
The short version
Match the finish to the plaster: limewash for the most traditional and most breathable result, clay or silicate paint for durability with genuine permeability, and a breathable emulsion only when its SD value earns the name. Never vinyl emulsion, never PVA.
